Chloe raised an eyebrow. “Smooth.”
As they laughed, the café door swung open, and a tall, blonde man strode in. Chloe’s eyes widened. “Oh, no. It’s Tom.”
“Tom?” Emily asked, confused.
“My ex,” Chloe whispered. “He’s like a bad penny—keeps showing up.”
Tom spotted their group and made his way over. “Chloe! Fancy seeing you here.”
Chloe forced a smile. “Hi, Tom. This is Emily and Daniel.”
Tom ignored the introductions and focused on Chloe. “We should talk. I’ve been meaning to—”
“Actually,” Daniel interrupted smoothly, “we’re in the middle of something. Maybe another time?”
Tom glared but eventually walked away. Chloe exhaled in relief. “Thanks, Daniel. That guy just doesn’t get the hint.”
“No problem,” Daniel replied. “That’s what friends are for.”
Chloe beamed. “You’re a keeper, Daniel. Emily, don’t let this one slip away.”
Emily blushed but couldn’t hide her smile.
