EPISODE 4 – The Unexpected Truth
Months passed. I got admission into university. Anita and my brother helped me move on. Michael remained a loyal friend. But one evening, at a school fellowship program…
I SAW DANIEL.
Yes. He was right there. Same voice. Same eyes. But something about him was different — colder. We spoke, but not like before. Anita was shocked. Michael stood quietly behind me.
Later that night, Daniel sent another message:
“I need to explain something. Can we meet tomorrow?”
Anita told me not to go. Michael offered to go with me. But I agreed to meet Daniel alone.
We met at a quiet restaurant. He looked nervous. I sat in silence, waiting.
He finally spoke…
“I ended things because I thought it was the best way to protect you.”
I was confused. Protect me from what?
Then he continued…
“There’s something about my family I never told you. Samuel — the boy in our group project — is actually my cousin. My father wanted me to focus only on academics. He believed emotions destroy destinies. Samuel was spying on me… and I knew it. That’s why he warned you. My dad told me to cut off everything… including you.”
My hands trembled.
“Your father told you to leave me?” I whispered.
Daniel nodded, tearing up.
“I didn’t want to. But I didn’t know how to fight him. I didn’t know how to fight life. I thought leaving was the safest thing for you. I thought you deserved someone better.”
I felt my chest tighten. All the pain, all the silence… had a reason.
We didn’t get back together. He said he needed time to grow, to heal… to finally choose his own life.
Before leaving, he said something I’ll never forget:
“You were my first love, Joy. Not the perfect one… but the one that made me believe love was real.”
That day, I didn’t hold onto him. I held onto the lesson.
Lesson Derived:
This episode teaches that sometimes people walk away not because they stopped loving us, but because they are fighting battles we cannot see. Daniel’s decision, though painful, came from pressure, fear, and lack of courage to confront life. It reminds us that love is not always about ending up together — sometimes it is about learning, healing, and growing. True maturity comes when we accept closure, choose peace over emotional wounds, and allow ourselves to move forward without bitterness.
