The following week, a police detective arrived at the hospital. Detective Harris — tall, sharp-eyed, the kind of man who could read you in seconds.
“I’m investigating a series of assaults and robberies,” he said at the nurses’ station. “Same suspect in each case: tall woman, dark hair. Witnesses place her near Greenway Street.”
“That’s your street,” Angela whispered to Rita as Harris glanced in their direction.
Harris addressed Rita directly. “Do you know anyone who fits that description?”
Rita forced a polite smile. “No. Sorry.”
That night, she tried to stay awake. But at some point, sleep won. She woke at dawn on a park bench, barefoot, her hands smeared with dried blood.
Mathew came to see her that evening.
“Angela called me,” he said, his tone firm. “You’ve been acting strange. What’s going on?”
“I… don’t know,” Rita admitted. “I keep losing time.”
Mathew’s brow furrowed. “You need help, Rita. Before something terrible happens.”
